Q&A: What are some tuners and/or metronomes that you would suggest?

Question by Ritalin: What are some tuners and/or metronomes that you would suggest?
I need a metronome at least, but I would like a combination metronome and tuner if possible. I play a Bb trumpet. I would like a tuner that can go 120 bpm or more, as I currently need to practice jazz music, and have a few problems counting. In addition, I also need to work on marching band music, specially keeping a certain high passage in tune. So far, I might buy one of the following:

Boss TU80 Tuner and Metronome

Korg TM40 Digital Tuner Metronome.

I’m not sure about the first one, because there is only one review, but the reviews for the second are good.

Besides the above, what else do you suggest?

Korg = good.
Boss = OK.
Qwik Tune = junk.

I have a Korg CA-30 and TM-40, and I highly recommend them both (though the CA-30 has been discontinued).

BTW, your links don’t work.

I’m assuming you’re lead guitar right? If you’re rhythm and need to tune during a show you either need new strings or a better guitar. So I’m going to assume you’re lead.

My first piece of advice is to go to your local music store and tell them you want to set up a foot switch board. If you’re playing lead this is a must for live shows.

On stage tuner link:

That will fit very well on your foot board.

If you dont have the money to set up a full stage rig that’s fine you can get more as you go along I would suggest grabbing a volume pedal if you dont already have one, and then adding a few of your choice effects. Foot switch is really the only way to go if you’re on stage and dont have a built in tuner on your guitar.

Hope this helps

Boss DB-30 Metronome (review)

Sorry about english I was drunk. (joke) It’s portable, reliable, and fun to use — the DB-30 helps musicians take their music to higher levels by offering a set of features that defies its diminutive size. Much more than just a simple timekeeper, this pocket-sized metronome can lay down a variety of rhythm patterns and time feels to practice along with, and it has a few timekeeping tricks up its sleeve as well. Portable, ruggedly built, and packed with fun play-along patterns 24 beat variations with complex beats, and 9 rhythm patterns Large LCD with smooth tempo meter Tap-tempo feature 12 internal chromatic reference tones Convenient Phones jack and Auto Power-Off function

I guess “more fun than a metronome” is really damning with faint praise.Hehe.It’s a fantastic machine in a lot of ways but doesn’t sound at it’s very best through a guitar amp.Glad I dug it out though. #33 Most discussed (UK) music #35 Top rated (UK) music

Professional-Quality Phrase Sampling
While the SP-303 is easily the most affordable phrase sampler on the market, its professional sound and specs are on par with far more expensive models. Up to eight mono samples may be triggered at once—even when sampling using the “Standard” 44.1kHz recording mode. Two additional modes are provided for additional sampling time or to create “Lo-fi” effects.
New Pattern Sequencer
An onboard pattern sequencer makes creating songs from loops and phrases easy. Just select the length (up to 99 measures) and play along to the internal metronome. A quantize function corrects your timing, making it possible to create drum patterns by sampling individual sounds to the pads. And unlike the limited memory of other phrase samplers, the SP-303’s sequencer can store up 7,500 notes.

26 Killer Effects
Not just a sampler, but a full-blown effects processor, the SP-303 includes 26 professional effects like reverb, flanger, delay, and Voice Transformer—plus wicked distortion, filter, Slicer, Isolator, Lo-Fi, and Vinyl Simulator algorithms for twisting your sound to the extreme. Best of all, these effects can be applied to multiple samples simultaneously or live input signals.

Resampling and More
Once you’ve found the perfect effect, you can resample the sound to a new pad. This makes it possible to get even more out of the EF-303’s effects section. And adjusting effect parameters such as filter cutoff, delay time or modulation depth, for example, is as simple as twisting a knob.

SmartMedia Compatible
The SP-303 is the only low-cost phrase sampler that can use SmartMedia cards for expanding internal sampling time (up to 200 minutes*) in addition to backing up data. You can even store .WAV and AIFF files from your PC to SmartMedia cards and load them into the SP-303 using a new import function**.

*Using 64MB SmartMedia card and Lo-fi sampling in mono.
**Requires SmartMedia adaptor or PCI adaptor card.
