Q&A: What are some tuners and/or metronomes that you would suggest?

Question by Ritalin: What are some tuners and/or metronomes that you would suggest?
I need a metronome at least, but I would like a combination metronome and tuner if possible. I play a Bb trumpet. I would like a tuner that can go 120 bpm or more, as I currently need to practice jazz music, and have a few problems counting. In addition, I also need to work on marching band music, specially keeping a certain high passage in tune. So far, I might buy one of the following:

Boss TU80 Tuner and Metronome

Korg TM40 Digital Tuner Metronome.

http://www.samash.com/p/TM40%20Digital%2…

I’m not sure about the first one, because there is only one review, but the reviews for the second are good.

Besides the above, what else do you suggest?

Korg = good.
Boss = OK.
Qwik Tune = junk.

I have a Korg CA-30 and TM-40, and I highly recommend them both (though the CA-30 has been discontinued).

BTW, your links don’t work.

The Boss tuner. I’ve owned several tuners and the cheaper ones work just as good as the more expensive ones.

Are Jupiter soprano saxes of good quality? How would you compare them to Selmer and Yamaha?

Question by llleeeooo1: Are Jupiter soprano saxes of good quality? How would you compare them to Selmer and Yamaha?
I just found a Jupiter sax that comes with a cleaning kit, case, 2 metronomes, and a tuner for $ 1200, I got the seller to go down on the price to $ 800 and I want to make sure the price is worth it. Can anyone help me?

first of all, cheers to a fellow sax player! now to bussiness:

selmer has been making saxophones since they first were in france. back then saxes were made for the military band, and selmer combines the perfectness of a classical instrument with the hard, stretched out range of the military instruments. selmer was the finest maker of the saxophone until yamaha came. still selmer makes good quality saxophones.

yamaha has been making saxes since the beginning of the 20th century. they copied selmers style of the sax and made them just as selmer. but since then yamaha has made every instrument and they are a “jack of all traits” instead of a “master of one”. because of this, they make adequite saxes.

jupiter has been only going on for a while, but there marksmanship has already been used by famous saxophonists. making jupiter a fine sax industry.

i will rate them according to my expiriences:
1.jupiter
2.selmer
3.yamaha

if i were you, i would pick to play the jupiter because if has only been around for a whil but is already recignizable.

Am planning to finally get a new metronome…what would you recommend?

Question by 88Keys: Am planning to finally get a new metronome…what would you recommend?
- for a classical pianist (music major)
- affordable (under )
- volume control (not necessary, but preferred)
- non-pitched clicks/ticks/thunks/beats/whatever =)
- either NO chime on the first beat of a measure OR the option to turn it off
- fairly durable/long-lasting

If anyone has any personal experience with SQ-50’s, Sabine Zipbeat 6000’s and Matrix 500’s, I’d be grateful for your opinions. Thanks!

I have used a Seiko SQM 358 for a number of years and it works well (not sure if it is still available). I have no experience with the other models you listed.

To see some of the models and get some comparative information check here:

Good luck on your quest.
